Q: Your critic number one, the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) and the ‘Centre Against Private Medical Colleges’ charge that the SAITM chairman Dr. Neville Fernando and its Board of Directors had committed fraud in establishing the SAITM by providing false information. What do you have to say about this serious allegation?
A: These are just baseless allegations because SAITM from its inception acquired the license in terms of the Board of Investment Law of Sri Lanka Act No 4 of 1978 (as amended) having been registered under Section 17 (2) of the said Act, to set up a higher education institute to provide training in Information Technology, Management and Finance, Engineering, Vocational Studies, Nursing, Languages and Health Sciences.

One of Sri Lanka’s veteran Physicians and a Philanthropist Dr. Neville Fernando – the Chairman of the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) and Dr. Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital (NFTH) recently donated over 1,600 books in his private collection to the National Library in Colombo. According to the National Library officials Dr. Neville Fernando’s book collection is the second largest private book collection that was donated to national libraries after Sri Lanka’s ‘Greatest Author’ Martin Wickramasinghe’s private book collection that had over 5,000 books.

The Malabe Private Medical Faculty has been recognized as a degreeawarding institution by the UGC and the Higher Education Ministry with the concurrence of the Sri Lanka Medical Council, the Higher Education Minister said yesterday.

Quality Multimedia Education at SAITM is Recognized by the Industry

Quality versus quantity is the hot topic today. In keeping with the traditional quality education which was available in Sri Lanka, which is still prevails in our traditional universities, can also be seen at SAITM as Quality Assurance and Accreditation Council of the University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka recognized SAITM as the first higher educational institute in the country to offer their own degrees.

Russia affiliated with SAITM

The Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy (NNSMA) of Russian Federation has confirmed its affiliation to the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM). This was announced at a press conference held at SAITM on 31 st January 2012 where the head of International relations of NNSMA, Prof. Vladimir Zagainov noted that Russia is willing to help Sri Lanka to create high quality educational establishments.

Considering the number of people per universities in other countries, Sri Lanka needs to establish a minimum of new 40 universities. SAITM Engineering undergraduates take wing to AIT

Come August 31, 2011, the lives of 60 bright young Engineering students of SAITM will change forever. After successfully completing the first stage of their degree programmes in various disciplines ranging from Civil and Infrastructure Engineering to Mechatronics Engineering, they will take wing to Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand for the final stage of the BSc. Eng.(Hons) degree spanning two years.

The External Verifier from Edexcel , UK Gives an Excellent feedback to the Faculty of Management and Finance.

The Edexcel External verifier visit which was held on 9th August 2011 was a very successful visit. The External verifier Ms. Nicola Mortimer- Stokes, who is also the European representative of the Internal Quality Assurance Advisory committee, awarded an “A” grading for the consecutive second time and gave an excellent feedback to the faculty of Management and Finance.

SAITM keeps going strong with Fourth Intake !

Under the new policy of the Government of H.E. President Mahinda Rajapakse, Private non Governmental Universities have been allowed to be set up in Sri Lanka.

Accordingly a monitoring committee headed by Prof. Rohan Rajapakse – Vice Chairman of the UGC visited the Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy Sri Lanka Campus at Malabe on the 19th of November 2010.

SAITM Opens up Opportunities for Jaffna Students

The South Asian Institute of Technology and Management (SAITM) Participated in Jaffna Education Fair on 18th & 19th September 2010 at Jaffna Central College. The objective of participating in the event was to build awareness about SAITM in the Northern Province as well as to provide counseling/career guidance for students who are seeking for higher education options. Event was a success and SAITM expect a considerable number of students from North to join its October and February intakes, for Medicine, Engineering, Management and Multimedia degrees.

External verifier visits SAITM ICT and Media Faculty

As part of quality assurance procedure, Ms. Stella Power, the External Verifier from Edexcel UK, visited SAITM ICT and Media Faculty last month. After going through the course material, facilities and student assignments in detail, this is what she said:
