Department of Histology, Embryology and Cytology

"It is highly dishonourable for a reasonable Soul to reside in so divinely built a mansion as the Body she resides in,
altogether unacquainted with the exquisite structure of it"

- Robert Boyle, 17th century Chemist

What is Anatomy?
Anatomy deals with the structures of the human body and how these structures relate to each other and to their function. It is an extensive field of study that involves the investigation of body structure within various subdivisions and specialties. These include the gross structure (macroscopic anatomy), understanding of the structure and function at cellular, sub cellular and molecular levels (molecular biology and Histology), the basic events of prenatal development (embryology and genetics), diagnostic anatomy and visual imaging procedures.

This course will be studied by systems and will deal with the gross structure with emphasis on its morphological, functional and clinical aspects. Embryological anatomy, topographical as well as three dimensional anatomy together with its relation to diagnostic and visual imaging procedures will also form part of the course.
The microscopic structure will be dealt with in the Histology course conducted concurrently with the gross anatomy program. This will also include early human development.
Molecular Biology will be covered in the Biology and Biochemistry courses.

Histology
The human body is made up of a number of organs and systems that have their own unique function yet interact with one another. Histology is the study of microscopic structure of the cells (cytology) and tissues, their organization to form the organs and systems of the body and their adaptation to their functions. It is the meeting point of anatomy, physiology and biochemistry. It is also a basis for the understanding of the changes that occur in these organs during diseases.

A comprehensive knowledge of the changes that occur during early human development forms part of this course.
