Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology | Courses and Training

Department Curriculum
Obstetrics & Gynaecology will be first introduced to students in the 3rd year 6th semester.

In the 6th semester they will have introductory lecture given by the professor and following once a week lecture.

Two hour skills lab training done in the skills lab where the students will given hands on training on normal deliveries,
instrumental deliveries and suturing of the episiotomies.

In the 7th semester they will have 2 lectures per week given by senior lecturers in the department followed by two hour small group discussion
every week on given topics. As at present for the small group discussions the batch will divided in to 04 groups and the groups will be rotating.

Students will have 2 hour sessions in the skills lab on manual removal of the placenta and managing acute emergencies in the labour room
such as acute inversion of uterus, Post partum haemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, delivering of twins & breech.

In 8th semester they will have once a week lecture and two hour small group discussion per week.

Semester 9 & 10 will be the professorial appointments where the students could do clinical training in the morning and they will have
senior ward classes of 02 hour duration in the afternoon in the ward setting. This will include also the students doing
professorial appointments other than Obstetrics & Gynaecology.


The Clinical Rotation is as follows:

Two 04 weeks appointment during the 3rd & 4th years in semester 6, 7 and 8.

Student are expected to do the clinical training 4 hour a day (between 8.00 am to 12.00 noon) for 6 days a week (Monday to Saturday).

A total of 24 hour a week during these appointments students are expected to participate after hour clinical training and look
after patients in labour until delivery.

During an appointment ½ of the group should work in the obstetrics ward & other ½ of the group should work in the
gynaecology ward, and then change over wards at the middle of the appointment.

Student should attend all clinic sessions and operating theatre sessions both routine and emergencies.

During the professorial appointment, students are rostered to work as a student houseman. Houseman should clerk all the
patients admitted to the ward, monitor critically ill patient and attend to all emergencies. Housemen should be working on
Sunday and public holidays.

All emergency and routine surgeries will be assisted by students.



The Teaching Learning Methods

Lectures
•  There will be one hour lecture on each topic mentioned in the course content, conducted by professor, senior lecturers
•  In the 6th and 8th semester there will be one lecture per week but on 7th semester there will be two lectures per week

Small Group Discussions
•  There will be two hour small group discussion following each lecture conducted by Professor, Senior lecturers
•  These will be done with student interaction and may be based on clinical problems

Skills Sessions
•  There will be Skills sessions carried out in the skills laboratory
•  The students will be taught how to perform normal deliveries, forceps and vacuum deliveries in the mannequins
•  Suturing of the episiotomies will be taught

The Clinical Rotation

   •  In addition senior ward classes in weekdays 03.00pm to 05.00pm for 03 days a week.
   •  Casualty & monitoring patients in labour room after 04.00 pm as required

Academic Guidance
•  Discussion and analysis of the credit papers are done by the entire academic department with the students once the marks are released.
•  Revision Course for Professorial Unit Students (after the Gyn & Obs Appointments)
