SAITM - Faculty of Engineering


SAITM Faculty of Engineering is one of the pioneering not-state engineering faculties in Sri Lanka. It has been home to more than 500 Engineering students whom are already into post graduate studies in world renowned universities or in leading Engineering firms. SAITM offers a unique learning experience with its ministry approved local Engineering degree programs along with its strong collaborations with world leading universities such as RMIT - Australia, University of Newcastle - Australia, and Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) - Thailand.

Three departments of SAITM faculty of Engineering are full of highly qualified academic staff, and they provide state-of-the-art facilities with their high class laboratories and learning environments. It focuses on student-centred education to equip students with theoretical knowledge, technical skills, and practical experience to provide work-ready Engineering graduates. In addition, there is an impressive range of extra-curricular activities that encourage students to break new ground in their areas of interest.


             


Academic Departments

Civil Engineering is inarguably the oldest engineering discipline in the world. Our 2500 years old history of gigantic stupas like “Jethawanaramaya”, colossal and complex irrigation systems like “Parakkrama Samudraya” and “Yoda Ela” and world heritage sites like “Seegiri Palace” makes us , Sri Lankans, the proud successors of a super nation of one of the history’s greatest Civil Engineers in world.

Civil Engineering is a “people serving profession”. People all over the world rely on Civil Engineers in almost all of their heir day to day activities. For example, the whole infrastructure setup you use (Built environments, roads, expressways, railways, bridges, dams, canals), the energy you consume (hydro, coal, steam), the clean water that flows out from your tap, all these involves the input of a Civil Engineer.

The Department of Civil Engineering at SAITM, offers two B. Sc. Engineering degree programs in Civil Engineering, one in affiliation with the prestigious Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand since 2009 and the other being the SAITM local degree in Civil Engineering from year 2015 onwards. In both degree programs, curriculums are so designed that they cover the whole spectrum of Civil Engineering with subjects in Structural, Geotechnical, Hydraulics, Environmental and Transportation Engineering modules.

SAITM, being a pioneering higher education institute in the country, strongly believe in the “quality education” and always committed to provide the highest quality education to students interested in civil engineering. In our curriculums a serious attention is paid on providing our students a firm foundation in Mathematics and other science and engineering fundamentals to make sure that they are well equipped and ready to adapt to changing technology in the profession. Therefore, the Department actively promotes curriculum development by updating existing courses, developing new courses and preparing resource material for teaching incorporating feedback from academia, students and the industry as well.

Further, the department under its Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program, organizes short courses in Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering and Finite Element Modeling (FEM) from time to time and always promote staff members in participating international and local workshops and other specialized training sessions. Further, the department undertakes industrial consultancy works as a part of its interaction with industry.

The department has a very strong relationship with the other state Engineering faculties and also with the industry. The academic staff of the department comprises of Ph.D. holders from local and foreign universities different areas in Civil Engineering and also from state faculties and industry experts. The department is having collaborative research works with local and international universities in many diverse fields related to Civil Engineering.

Leading private sector and government sector construction companies and design offices are regular recruiters of our graduates. Many students pursued masters and doctoral degree programs in various other countries like, USA, Australia, Hong-Kong, Japan and Thailand.

Department of Civil & Infrastructure Engineering at SAITM, since inception in 2009, is considering its existence and functionality as a “national need” and helping the country by producing world class young Civil Engineers who are capable of handling any challenge in life to serve the mankind.

             

Since its inception, SAITM offered engineering bachelor degree programs in Mechatronics Engineering. Mechatronics is a relatively new branch of engineering that combines the principles of mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, control engineering, systems design engineering, and computer engineering. The combination of these engineering principles helps generate simpler, more cost-effective and dependable systems. As a result, Mechatronics Engineering is at the forefront of technological advancements, creating smarter products, devices and processes, across a variety of sectors, such as Aeronautics, Automobile, Biomechanics, Biomedical, Manufacturing, Minerals and Energy, Power Generation, Robotics and Automation.

  • Curriculum
    Mechatronics Engineering degree program at SAITM focuses on providing a sound fundamental understanding of the technical skills and principles of Mechatronics Engineering and their application to complex, open-ended engineering tasks and problems. In light of this commitment, the faculty has established well-equipped Electronics and Mechatronics laboratories with dedicated project areas for students, as well as a fully-functional Engineering workshop for prototype development. In addition, the program strives to equip students with generic skills, including management, communication, problem-solving and design skills that are highly valued both in industry and academia. From the early stages, students will get involved in mandatory design projects, which enable them to develop problem solving skills, while working on real-life Engineering problems.

    The program also provides opportunities for students to interact with industry professionals through guest lectures, industrial placements, field visits, and project work, paving way for a variety of career paths. As an integral part of the degree program, students should complete six months of industrial training, in two phases. Over the past years SAITM undergraduates have completed their industrial placements at reputed engineering organizations including Sri Lankan Airlines, Diesel and Motor Engineering PLC (DIMO), Micro Cars Ltd, Colombo Dockyard Ltd and Nikini Automation Systems.
  • Laboratories
    A comprehensive range of most modern equipment are available at SAITM Mechatronics Engineering laboratories covering Robotics, Electronics and Telecommunication manned by well qualified staff.

 

             

  • Degree awarded
    Department of Environmental and Biosystems Engineering currently offers Bachelor of Science in Biosystems Engineering (Food and Bioprocess Engineering specialization), four years full time degree program, in affiliation with the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand.
  • Rationale:
    Biosystems engineering is a relatively novel educational area in Asia. Biosystems Engineering involves the integration of engineering principles with biological, environmental, and agricultural sciences to develop food and bio-energy production systems. Thus the Biosystems Engineering Degree Program blends the processes of biological systems with engineering principles to empower students with knowledge and skills to develop innovative food (crop, livestock, fish) production and product processing systems, and renewable bio-energy derived from biological sources.

    A broad range of career opportunities exist for a Biosystems Engineer in the private sector, government, or academia, and they are particularly qualified to work at production systems and research areas that use technology and living systems interface – whether in food, fiber, and fuel production, environmental resources optimization issues, or cleaner production in a biological context. Key fields of employment include;
        - Food and Beverage industry
        - Agricultural, ingredient manufacturing and service industries
        - Post-harvesting technologies
        - Packaging Industry
        - Bio Process Technology and Bio Energy
        - Instrumentation and Control
        - Education and Research
        - Law and Medicine

    A graduate can chose to be a production process designer in agricultural/aquaculture/livestock production systems, a developer of post‐harvest technologies, a product designer in ever expanding food industry, a technical/quality control manager in food manufacturing and packaging industries or a production engineer in a livestock/fish feed mill.

    Government agencies hire Bio-systems Engineers in developing and implementing food quality control standards and to develop appropriate technological tools that can be extended to small-holder farmers. Universities and research institutions employ Bio-systems Engineers in their research and education programs in agricultural Engineering and bioprocess technology.

AIT, established in 1959 under UN charter is a foremost postgraduate teaching and research university, has maintained highest international standards, turning out world class engineers and academics over a period of more than 50 years. To cater the worldwide high demand for AIT graduates the university has ventured into undergraduate programs and SAITM has been selected as the partner campus representing the South Asian region to conduct the first phase of AIT degree programs since 2009 and the collaborative twostage Masters degree programs and one year postgraduate diploma programs started in 2016.
