SAITM Launches BSc Engineering degree programs
under UGC, with a direct link to AIT Masters.

Gazette Notification : 1913/14 on 07/05/2015

The Faculty of Engineering (FoE) of South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) which has made a name for itself for its high quality brand of engineering degree programs launches into a new phase offering two 4 year full time BSc. Engineering degree programs under the University Grants commission (UGC) approved by the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE), Sri Lanka. The Gazette notification in this regard was issued on 7th May 2015 thus making SAITM the first non state sector campus to offer government approved engineering degree courses.

The two programs, namely BSc. Engineering in Civil Engineering and BSc. Engineering in Mechatronics Engineering will entertain students who have been successful in local or London A/Ls in Mathematics stream under the guidance and supervision of UGC/MoHE and therefore will present a highly beneficial opportunity to the youth of Sri Lanka. The programs have been molded to confirm to local and international standards by independent expert panels appointed by the MoHE are also developed within the guidelines provided by the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) which will help SAITM students to obtain membership in professional bodies upon accreditation.

Though the degree programs are launched this year, conducting highest quality engineering degree programs and producing many highly sought after engineering graduates is nothing new to SAITM faculty of engineering. Established in 2009 SAITM faculty of engineering has been conducting a number of highly successful degree programs in a 2+2 model in collaboration with the prestigious Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok, Thailand. AIT, which is the only UN backed, international inter-governmental non-profit university in the world is renowned for its world class postgraduate programs and research in a multi-cultural setting since 1959.

Collaborating closely, it is a fact that both institutions produced many top notch engineering graduates, some pursuing their Masters and Doctoral studies while the rest are well employed in all sectors of engineering disciplines locally and internationally. Keeping to the stringent international quality standards set by AIT, SAITM faculty of engineering has invested heavily in modern laboratories, libraries and other infrastructure as well as recruiting top academia consisting almost entirely of PhD holders in their respective field of study. SAITM FoE is also renowned for its annual Research Symposium on Engineering Advancements (RSEA) which has become a keenly awaited event among the engineering research fraternity in Sri Lanka, currently in its 5th year and the annual Robotics competition with more than 200 Robots competing against each other representing all state engineering faculties, non-state sector higher education institutions and more than 40 schools from all over the country.

Conducting 5 diverse engineering degree programs, namely, BSc Engineering in Civil & Infrastructure Engineering, BSC Engineering in Mechtronics Engineering, BSc Engineering in Electronics Engineering, BSc Engineering in Industrial Engineering and BSc in Bio Systems Engineering since 2009, SAITM FoE has also established Industry Consultative Boards (ICB), industry training for the undergraduates, research projects in collaboration with other local and international universities and industry as well as participating in inter-university sports competitions.

It is opportune time therefore for SAITM FoE to launch these high demand engineering degree programs, i.e. BSc. Engineering in Civil Engineering and BSc. Engineering in Mechatronics Engineering where many highly paid employment opportunities are available locally as well as internationally.

SAITM FoE has also recognized the fact that many students, in keeping with international trends and demands from the industry are actively seeking higher education opportunities at postgraduate level beyond the Bachelors. To cater to this very need, SAITM and AIT have jointly launched the SAITM/AIT International Collaborative Bachelors Masters program where students graduating from SAITM will have direct entry to AIT Masters programs at a special concessionary tuition fee. Students fulfilling the entry requirements will also have Fellowships / Scholarships for exceptional performances and will be housed in AIT hostels within the premises. The students will have opportunity to select from 15 different engineering specializations. The fields of specialization range from,
Civil Engineering Construction, Engineering and Infrastructure Management (CEIM) Geotechnical and Earth Resources Engineering (GTE) Geosystem Exploration and Petroleum GeoEngineering (GEPG) Structural Engineering (STE) Transportation Engineering (TRE) Water Engineering and Management(WEM) Offshore Technology and Management (OTM) Disaster Preparedness, Mitigation and Management (DPMM) Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (RS-GIS) Mechatronics Engineering Mechatronics (MEC) Microelectronics and Embedded Systems (MES) Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering (IME) Nanotechnology (NT) Computer Science (CS) Information Management (IM) Software Engineering (SE) Telecommunications (TC) Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Offshore Technology and Management (OTM) Biosystems Engineering Agri-Business Management Aquaculture and Aquatic Resources Management Food Engineering and Bioprocess Technology Energy Environment Engineering and Management Urban Environmental Management.

It is also heartening to note that both SAITM and AIT being non-profit organizations, the tuition fees are kept at a minimum (SAITM BSc. Approximately Rs. 1.6 million and AIT Masters approximately Rs. 2.4 million) affordable to many thousands of average income parents. SAITM will also provide necessary support for the students to obtain loans from leading financial institutions such Bank of Ceylon in addition to offering scholarships for outstanding performances.
