SAITM beat SLIIT : 10-07
SAITM vs SLIIT 10 a-side Rugby Encounter - 2015

Date : 17th of May 2015 at Air Force Grounds – Rathmalana

As the SAITM sports season is about to kickoff for yet another season the SAITM rugby team took the field for the first encounter of the season against hometown rivals SLIIT in what was a revival of the classic ‘Malabe Derby’. Led by 3rd year coloursman Sachitha Wijeyeratne and boasting a wealth of experience in the form of seniors such as Dilshan Palihakkara, Dhananjaya Doranegama, Tuan Miskin and Malik Monnekulame and co. mixed with some new exciting talent in the form of winger Olu Nanayakkara and second rower Dulith Gunasekara the team hit the grounds running against an equally impressive SLIIT side and managed to come out on tops in what was a see-saw encounter with SAITM pipping SLIIT at the final whistle just 10 points to 07.

What made the victory even more impressive was the fact that the SAITM team was missing key individuals at vital positions but the temporary replacements for the game were more than able in filling the chinks in the armour. After kickoff it was quite apparent that both teams were not going to go easy on each other and through a neatly worked backline move Olu Nanayakkara managed to dive over near the corner flag for the first try of the game. The SLIIT team though immediately hit back through their fly half who managed to break through the SAITM defense to score under the posts and followed it up with a successful conversion and the first half ended with the teams heading in to the sheds 7-5 in favour of SLIIT. However after the break SAITM through a series of sustained assault through their forwards managed to score another try through Maduranga Hettiarachchi to wrest the lead back in SAITM’s favour. With both teams defense holding up and some error strewn moves contributing to scrappy play no scores were made after Maduranga’s try and at the final whistle SAITM emerged victors 10-07.
