Advancements Concluded in a Great Success

Date : 26 April 2014
Technical workshop on FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF STRUCTURES
25th and 27th April 2014

SAITM Research Symposium on Engineering Advancements is an annual international conference organized by South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) where the outcomes of research work carried out by the academia, professionals and students on a multitude of engineering fields of specializations are presented to the engineering fraternity. Research symposiums are an extremely important functions related to the activities of any reputed university which is striving to produce world class graduates, particularly in engineering. It is significant to note that being a non-state sector higher education institution in engineering SAITM is the first to organize a research symposium in 2011 thereby initiating the research culture among her engineering students.

South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) is the first non state sector higher education institute in Sri Lanka to receive the degree awarding status by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Sri Lanka. SAITM offers degree programs in Engineering, Medicine, Multimedia, Management and Finance. Having the most advanced facilities and state of the art infrastructure, providing the unique university experience at an affordable cost SAITM has built up its image as an opportunity provided for the students who have not had the privilege to enter in to State Universities. SAITM is proud of being supportive, flexible and relevant to the real world and the teaching faculty comprises of highly qualified and experienced academics recruited according to UGC guidelines.

SAITM faculty of engineering established in 2009 offers Bachelor of Science (BSc.) in Engineering in the fields of Civil, Mechatronics, Electronics, Bio Systems, Industrial Engineering and Telecommunications in affiliation with world renowned and one of the most respected foreign universities in Sri Lanka, the Asian institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand. The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) which was established in Bangkok in 1959, is a leading postgraduate institution in the Asia Pacific region and is actively working with public and private sector partners throughout the region and with some of the top Universities in the world. Recognized for its multinational, multi-cultural ethos, the Institute operates as a self-contained international community at its campus located 40 km (25 miles) north of Bangkok, Thailand.

Besides the usual labs and academic buildings, the main campus includes housing, sports, and medical facilities, a conference center, and a library with over 230,000 volumes and 830 print and on-line periodicals. AIT is a degree awarding university fully recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Sri Lanka. AIT offers many scholarships at MSc and PhD levels to the graduates of Sri Lankan State Universities currently accommodating a student population of over 3000, including many Sri Lankan Students. AIT boasts of over 25,000 Alumni spread across the world attached to many leading organizations.

Research Symposium on Engineering Advancements (RSEA) organized by SAITM faculty of engineering marks the 4th occasion this annual event is held. In fact RSEA is the pioneering and the only research symposium organized by a non-state sector higher education institute in Sri Lanka. It will no doubt enhance the research competencies of the SAITM engineering students making them stand out in the engineering profession when they graduate. Already it is evident the positive contributions previous symposiums had on the students.

The event is participated by over 400 from the academia, professional and student communities representing state universities, industries and statuary bodies with over 70 research papers to be presented at the sessions.

The Chief Guest for the event is Prof. J. B. Dissanayake, Former Ambassador to Thailand and member of AIT governing body. Key note speeches are to be made by Dr. Thusitha Sugathapala, Director General, Sustainable Energy Authority of Sri Lanka, Prof. Rohan Munasinghe, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Electronics Engineering, University of Moratuwa and Prof H.S. Thilakasiri, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Moratuwa. Chairman of SAITM Dr. Neville Fernando and Dean Faculty of Engineering Dr. Sisuru Sendanayake will be present at the event.
