Sri Lankan Undergraduates excel at AIT

23rd May 2013 will be marked as a historical day at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok, Thailand. On that day 40 Sri Lankan students graduated, amongst many others from different nationalities, as the first group of honors graduates in Bachelor of Engineering (BSc. Eng Hons.) at the 119th graduation held at AIT conference center. Moreover, Sri Lankan students secured 13 First Class Honors, 8 Second Class Upper Division Honors and two Sri Lankan students, Ms. Thamali Gunaratne and Mr. Imthishan Mohammed Thasleem bagging the most outstanding Civil Engineering student and most outstanding Mechatronics Engineering student awards respectively. Out of the 40 Sri Lankan students 24 graduated as Civil & Infrastructure Engineers, 13 as Mechatronics Engineers and 3 as Electronics Engineers.

The graduation ceremony was held with the participation of a large gathering of distinguished guests from more than 50 countries around the world and was chaired by Professor Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai, President of AIT. The graduation speech was made by H.E Dr. Veerappa Moily, Minister, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India. It is noteworthy that all Sri Lankan students are those who transferred to AIT from South Asian Institute of technology and Medicine (SAITM), Sri Lanka after completion of the 1st 2 years of the 4 year BSc. Eng. Hons. Degree course, thus making it a very proud moment for Dr. Neville Fernando, Chairman of SAITM and all the faculty members. The occasion was attended by Dr. Sisuru Sendanayake, Dean, faculty of Engineering and Dr. R.S. Mallawarachchi, Head, department of Civil and Infrastructure Engineering along with a large group of parents and well wishers.

The excellent performance of Sri Lankan students is a tribute to the immense efforts taken by SAITM faculty of Engineering and AIT to maintain the academic quality and standards along with the infrastructure made available, in par with the best in the world thus help producing high quality engineers who will be world class professionals.

While AIT being an international, intergovernmental university with 60 years of proud history continues to command respect as a leading seat of learning in engineering in the Asia-Pacific region, SAITM has achieved remarkable progress attaining a high standard of academic excellence, making the undergraduate program the most successful courses offered in Engineering for Sri Lankan students. It is noted that the students have not only gained from high quality faculty and infrastructure facilities but by numerous course related events organized by the faculty such as the annual Research Symposium (SAITM Research Symposium on Engineering Advancements RSEA), the only research symposium conducted by a non-state sector institute of higher education, annual robotics competition (SAITM Robotic Challenge SRC), numerous guest lectures from industry specialists, workshops, field visits and industry training etc.

Of those who graduated from AIT at the 119th graduation in 2013, 13 students secured 100% scholarships, 8 students 75% scholarships and 10 students 50% scholarships to pursue Masters degree in the chosen fields of study at AIT which is a record for any university in Sri Lanka.
