The Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy (NNSMA) of Russian Federation has confirmed its affiliation to the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM).

This was announced at a press conference held at SAITM on 31 st January 2012 where the head of International relations of NNSMA, Prof. Vladimir Zagainov noted that Russia is willing to help Sri Lanka to create high quality educational establishments.

He said that the friendship between Russian and Sri Lanka as stated is the main cause behind considering an affiliation with SAITM.

According to Zagainov the students who enter SAITM can receive degrees which are recognized by the Federation of Russian and the curriculums of SAITM and NNSMA will be similar so that students can go to Russia to do the rest of the degree if they prefer, even after joining SAITM.

Dr. Sameera Senarathne director of SAITM who was also present at the press conference informed media that the teaching hospital of SAITM will be completed in June. He noted that following the completion they are hoping to get the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) to monitor the institution.

However Dr. Senarathne noted that SAITM has already received approval from the University Grants Commission and noted that now the institute has the degree awarding capacity.

Dr. Senarathne said that the hospital equipped with all the latest technology including four operation theatres with LED lights and cameras.

He also noted that the hospital premises were inspected by the Ambassador of Russian Federation to Sri Lanka and the Vice Chancellor of NNSMA. According to a request made by the Ambassador the hospital is to be named as Dr. Neville Fernando High Technology Sri Lanka Russia Friendship Teaching Hospital and the official opening ceremony is to be held in July 2012. A high level delegation will also come from Russia including ministers and may be the prime minister of Russia.
