SAITM – IQA




The South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) is a highly professional higher educational institute approved by the University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka, functioning with the intention of providing quality tertiary education to the entire South Asian region to meet the changing needs of the world today and tomorrow.

In order to ensure the continuous maintenance and development of high quality standards in every aspect of SAITM activities, SAITM appointed the Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) Committee in May, 2011 which is supervised by the Quality Assurance and Accreditation (QAA) Council of Sri Lanka, University Grants Commission, Ministry of Higher Education.

“Continuous support for institutional planning and decision making in maintaining and enhancing Standards & Quality in education at SAITM based on the mission and vision of the institute”.


COMMIITTEE STRUCTURE & MEMBERS

The Committee is chaired by the Vice Chancellor of SAITM and comprises of: a Committee Advisor from the QAA Council of Sri Lanka; Prof. Neville Fernando (Chairman, SAITM); All Faculty Deans and one nominee from each faculty (Medicine; Engineering; Management & Finance; and ICT & Media); One Representation/Nominee from the Board of Directors; Director Finance; Registrar; Bursar; Librarian; Manager-Marketing; Director/Principle Nursing Education; and Secretary to the committee.

SCHEDULING OF MEETINGS

The Committee is chaired by the Vice Chancellor of SAITM and the committee meetings are held monthly. Certain decisions are taken at these meetings and highly important and sensitive matters are forwarded to either Senate or Board of Directors as appropriate.


OUR RESPONSIBILITIES…

1) Co-ordinate all QA related activities within the Institution/ University;
2) Liaise with the UGC/QAA Council and other external QAA agencies;
3) Implementing QA Reviews/ Audit and implementing follow-up action;
4) Preparation of Institutional Self-evaluation report;
5) Preparation of Guidelines on QA for the Institution/ University;
6) Provide advice on QA to all faculties and departments;
7) Monitor and Guide faculty level QA activities;
8) Organize awareness programs on QA for the staff members;
9) Contribute Quality and QA aspects in to the corporate plan;
10) Identification and sharing of good practices with other departments;
11) Advice and assist in creating manuals
(e.g. Academic regulations, equipments manuals, laboratory manuals, etc)
12) Ensure their academic regulations/By-Laws are in place, if not make recommendations for remedial action.


WHERE ARE WE NOW…

The SAITM IQA committee proudly announces the successful completion of their Four years and two months of operations and within this period they have successfully conducted 33 monthly meetings, Eleven workshops which were conducted mostly once in two months basis for both academic and non-academic staff; two awareness programs and also their First in-house staff development program for the selected first batch of academic staff (16) and the Second in-house staff development program for the selected academic staff (17) covering different disciplines i.e. Medical, Engineering and Nursing with the support and supervision of the QAA Council of Sri Lanka.

Not only that, SAITM is an Institutional member of the Asia Pacific Quality Network (APQN) since July 2012 and won the APQN’s (Asia Pacific Quality Network) Best/Model Internal Quality Assurance Award-2014 at Hannoi, Vietnam in March 2014. Finally, SAITM IQA has successfully submitted a research paper (as planned) titled “Guidelines of Good Practices for Internal Quality Assurance Secretariats at Higher Educational Institutes” and this paper was accepted and presented at the APQN 2015 Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) which was held in Kunming, China from April 17-19, 2015.


SAITM - FIRST STAFF DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The SAITM IQA committee was able to successfully complete the First SAITM in-house staff development program for the selected first batch of 16 (out of 20) academics (from Medical, Management & Finance & ICT & Media faculties) with both the support and supervision of the QAA Council of Sri Lanka in terms of: program development and Review; identification of resource persons; assessment of participant’s achievements; assuring the quality of the program; etc for free of charge.

This program was conducted for 80 hours and commenced on September, 2011 and successfully completed on April, 2012. The program held on weekdays (full day) once in every two weeks basis during a period of six months. The program consisted of: class room lectures; guest speeches; various group and individual assessments; practical sessions; peer observation and evaluations and the final assessment was based on a combination of a portfolio, individual teaching session and peer observation session in the real class environment.

The main Resource Persons who tendered their valuable time, effort, guidance and support during this staff development program are: Prof. Colin N. Peiris, Director – QAA Council of the University Grants Commission; Prof. Udith Jayasinghe-Mudalige, Director - Staff Development Centre, Wayamba University; Prof Deepthi C. Bandara, Former Director - Staff Development Centre, University of Peradeniya; Prof. Nelun De Silva, Professor of Microbiology & Head of Microbiology, SAITM; Dr. Chalinda Beneragama, Director - Staff Development Centre, University of Peradeniya; Prof. Sirimewan Widyasekera, Dean Faculty of ICT & Media, SAITM; Prof. Veranja karunaratne, Science Team Leader, Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology (SLINTEC) & Professor in Chemistry, University of Peradeniya; and Mrs. Husni Hussain, Registrar, SAITM.

This program was conducted for 150 hours and commenced on April, 2013 and ended by 07th Feb 2014. The program was conducted on Fridays (full day) once in every two weeks basis during a period of ten months. The program consisted of: class room lectures; guest speeches; various group and individual assessments; practical sessions; peer observation and evaluations and the final assessment was based on a combination of a portfolio, individual teaching session and peer observation session in the real class environment.

SAITM - THIRD STAFF DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The SAITM IQA committee is planning to commence the staff development with more improvements and additions in September 2015 for a selected third batch of (17 participants) academics covering different disciplines (i.e. Medical, ICT & Media, Engineering, Nursing & Management) with both the support and supervision of the QAA Council of Sri Lanka in terms of: program development and Review; identification of resource persons; assessment of participant’s achievements; assuring the quality of the program; etc for free of charge.

Listing SAITM in two international University books - The committee is planning and working on listing SAITM in two international University books in the near future.

Continuous peer observation

Third SAITM Staff Development Program – Committee has decided to commence this program in September 2015.

Formulation of an IQA unit at the NFTH.

APQN- SAITM IQA committee is planning to:
